Clinical study on current jaw fractures of Koreans


Abstract
For the purpose of improvement in treatment result we performed a clinico-statistical study about the 391 cases diagnosed as jaw fractures in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Seoul National University Dental Hospital from January
1,
1990 to July 31, 1993 to July 31, 1993 on the basis of annual distribution, sex, site, cause, treatment methods, and post-operative complications.
@ES The results were follows:
@EN 1. The number of jaw fracture was 118 in 1990, 114 in 1991, 103 in 1992, and 56 between January and July in 1993, and the average monthly number of patient was 9.8 in 1990, 9.5 in 1991, 8.0 in 1992, and 8.0 in 1993.
The number of male patient was 311 and that of female was 78, leading to 4:1 of male-feamle ratio. By age, the third decade was the top with 40.7% of all age group and the forth, the second decade in descending order.
Site distribution as follows : maxilla fracture 36 cases, mandible fracture 355 cases and the percentage over was 9.2%, 9.0%, respectively. Symphyseal fracture was the most frequent in mandibular fracture with the number of 185 cases.
Fisticuff was 31.5%, fall down 29.9%, traffic accident 15.3%, and accident related to work and sports 12.8% of the cause of jaw fracture, with result of fisticuff being the most frequent cause.
Closed reduction with inter-maxillary fixation was 130 cases, open reduction with interosseous wiring was 64 cases, and open reduction with screw and plate fixation was 76 cases in treatment of jaw fractures. Average fixation period was 35.3,
37.9,
and
19.2 days, respectively.
Post-operative complication occurred in 45 out of 391 cases. Infection was 25 cases, malocclusion 13, temporomandibular joint dysfunction 2, postoperative scar contracture 1, and the rest was 4, Treatment was done at 42 cases out of 45, with the
cure
rate being 93.3%.
